Manuela is a native of Rhode Island. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Communications with a Speech and Hearing Science concentration from Rhode Island College and a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics/TESOL from Indiana University. She speaks three languages: English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
She has had extensive experience in working in the higher education domain. Currently, she teaches academic writing courses at the University of Rhode Island. She also works as a specialist at the university's writing center, providing one-on-one assistance to students, particularly non-native speakers of English, in improving their writing skills; these skills include the development of composition writing, résumés, and college application essays.
Manuela has taught many skills and levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) in various academic settings. She has also worked as an English for Special Purposes instructor in a corporate setting with professionals seeking to maximize their business communication skills. Her specialization is in working on pronunciation and foreign accent reduction. She has done consulting work in this area by providing individualized pronunciation improvement sessions for professionals who seek to improve their pronunciation in the workplace. Manuela is a member of the Massachusetts Association of Teachers of Speakers of Other Languages (MATSOL).
